How to Create Beautiful Raised Art on Canvas with Foam Board
Have you ever wanted to add interesting texture and depth to your canvas painting but didn't know how? Do you want to add texture and depth to your painting? I'll show you how using foam board. using foam board, ideal for adding elegance and visual flair to your creations.
What Is the First Step in Creating Raised Art from Foam Board?
Start by designing and cutting out a template. I chose a rose motif for this project.
First, sketch your design on paper, then carefully cut it out. You'll use this template to cut petals from the foam board. To make sure everything looks consistent, I recommend using White Airplac Premier Foam Board, 10 mm, which is easy to cut and holds its shape well, making assembly easier and the result more attractive.
How to Prepare the Canvas Background for Relief Art
Mix the texture paste with acrylic paint to create an interesting, textured background.
I mixed a soft blue with texture paste. The result had beautiful depth and a pleasant texture, creating a calm base that paired perfectly with the relief.
How to Arrange and Glue the Foam Board Petals
Once the petals are ready and textured, arrange them creatively on the canvas. You can glue each one in place with either a hot glue gun or ARTMIE Muse Glue.
Both options hold the individual pieces securely and give the artwork the stability and three-dimensional effect it needs. Place the petals one by one until you’re happy with the composition.
If you’ve applied texture paste or acrylic paint to the foam board, leave it to dry outside in the sun. This will speed up drying considerably, and the paint or paste will also adhere better to the surface. Place the board on a clean surface such as gravel or cardboard. This simple trick will save you time and effort!

Finishing Touches: How to Add Flair to Your Relief Art
Even after I had arranged all the petals, I still felt the artwork was missing something. In the end, I tried using fluid metallic paste ARTMIE MIDAS in gold.
This paste created a subtle, natural-looking golden effect that beautifully brightened the whole relief and added depth. It was a small but important touch that gave the artwork a final hint of elegance and individuality.
Common Mistakes to Avoid When Creating Relief Art
Keep these two things in mind when creating relief art:
- Overcrowding: Leave enough space between the petals so each one can stand out.
- Skipping the texture: Texture paste adds depth and interest to the artwork, so be sure not to skip this step!
Foam board is a creative, affordable alternative to traditional sculpting materials. It’s a great, accessible material for any artist.
